Hi all So im sitting in my living room watching bloody X factor when the responder phone jumps into action, only a text this time.... christ its a cardiac arrest, i launch out of the sofa jacket on run out to the car, fire up the sat nav check back to the phone to look up the postcode. Then i realised, the message was sent 50 minutes ago, i ring control to find out if there is anything i can do ....nope. What had happened was the phone had lost signal and when it regained signal it recieved the delayed text. My point is mobile phones and pagers are not reliable signal wise one minute you have signal the next you dont, I think my house must be a dead spot for it. I have tried looking at signal boosters but they are expensive and for one persons house its to much money for our groups resources. Our there any alternatives Tom

This has been one of my biggest 'moans' as a CFR. when I was in Dorset, we had s/w radios and dedicated mobile phones, and Control also had our rota with our land line number as backup. It's true to say that sometimes all 3 were going off at once, but that's better than receiving the delayed text message or 'missed phone call' message that happens with just mobiles. Since the ambulances have gone over to the new digital radio system, responders no longer carry s/w radios. I now only have a mobile phone, and it's really not up to the job, i.e. NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. I can''t see the ambulance trusts forking out for proper radio comms, so I guess we are stuck with it. Of course, we all know what goes down first in times of Civil Emergencies - Yes, the Mobile Phone Network. So I hope Control won't need me in such a crisis. The only constructive suggestion I have is that each Ambulance Control should have a private web page accessible by responders or their administrators where a landline backup number can be posted to give additional communications facility.

Hey all, might have a bit of a solution pop up for responders in the Norfolk area and hopefully the surrounding areas, just heard they are testing, tetra air wave pda's and also digital pagers, thus getting rid of the need for standard air wave signal. apparently they will have options to press a button for the arrival and clear of scene making it easier for control to see when we have arrived and left the scene, hopefully this will be a step forward for us all.. Regards Tom
